Greek Scholarship and Academics

iota phi theta graduation

FACT: SIU Greek GPA is higher than all University GPA.

FACT: SIU freshmen & sophomore GPAs are consistently higher than non-Greek freshmen & sophomore GPAs.

FACT: SIU all-sorority GPA is above the all-women’s GPA.

FACT: SIU all-fraternity GPA is above the all-men's GPA.

This is most important aspect of college life and it is the foundation of Greek Life. Academics are emphasized by all chapters from the new member/pledging process through graduation. Fraternities and sororities can help make the academic transition from high school to college easier, as well as improve the scholarship of continuing students.

Many resources for the promotion of academic excellence are available to all fraternities and sororities. The wide range of majors insures that someone will always be able to help members with their studies. Chapters also offer structured academic programs to ensure academic success and to hold chapter members accountable to reaching academic success. These programs offer study hours, tutoring, mid-semester grade checks, academic programs, etc.

While fraternities and sororities do not hold any magical keys to scholastic success, studies have shown that members of Greek organizations are more likely to obtain a degree than non-affiliated students.

Academic Requirements:

Each chapter and council has minimum academic standards potential new members/pledges must meet prior to joining the organization. Please check with the chapter to find out these minimum requirements. A 2.5 cumulative GPA is needed to join any Greek organization.

Order of Omega is a nationally organized Greek Honor Society. It is open to males and females of social fraternities and sororities. To join applicants must be at least junior standing and have a 3.0 cumulative GPA at SIUC. The primary selection to this society is individual character and leadership abilities. Records will be evaluated and critiqued by the society to determine if you are eligible to join our elite society. Besides this application, applicants must also submit a copy of their SIUC transcript. After critique of all applicants, the society then votes by secret ballot to determine if applicants will join their ranks. There is a one-time $50 transaction fee for selected applicants. A personal letter and/or email will notify applicants if selected, and initiation will be towards the end of the semester. Remember, only 3% of the Greek system at any university is selected to sit on Order of Omega, making selection very keen. If you have any questions, you may contact David Goldberg (dgoldd@siu.edu)

The Purpose of Order of Omega

To recognize those fraternity men and women who have attained a high standard of leadership in interfraternity activities, to encourage them to continue along this line, and to inspire others to strive for similar conspicuous attainment;

To bring together outstanding fraternity men and women to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate fraternity affairs.

To bring together members of the faculty, alumni, and student members of the institution’s fraternities and sororities on a basis of mutual interest, understanding and helpfulness;

To help create an atmosphere where ideas and issues can be discussed openly across Greek lines and to help work out solutions.
