Welcome Parents
Welcome to Greek Life and to Southern Illinois University Carbondale! We encourage you to take a few minutes to browse through this website and to consider why more than 800,000 college students nationwide have chosen to become members of Greek organizations. As a parent of a potential fraternity or sorority member, you’ll learn about the incredible opportunities available for your son or daughter.
The Greek community at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been in existence since 1923, with a continuing tradition of excellence. Through the years, we have been a community that fosters academic excellence, leadership ability, philanthropic services, and active contributions to both the campus and Carbondale communities. Our Greek community consists of 7 sororities, 20 fraternities, and 1 co-ed group. While each organization maintains its own activities, traditions, and national affiliations, each is founded on similar principles of scholarship, leadership, community service, and lifelong friendship.
Our Greek community has developed extensive self-governing policies concerning human rights, hazing, and substance abuse. In addition, the Inter-Greek Council, comprised of undergraduate chapter members, serve as the governing bodies for the fraternities and sororities. They have developed an annual evaluation instrument that evaluates each chapter and holds them accountable.
The Greek experience at SIUC provides a safe and fun way to maximize the college experience. Your son or daughter will also find personal growth and development extending far beyond his or her years on campus.
We look forward to beginning this journey with you and working with both you and your student(s) in the future. Please let us know how we can help you.
Sincerely,
Andy Morgan

How Can Your Child Benefit?
For your child, making the transition from high school or a community college to a four-year college or university may seem like an imposing challenge. One or more of the following questions may be on his/her mind:
- Will I fit in and make new friends?
- Will I be able to succeed academically?
- Will I be able to get involved in campus organizations and better my leadership skills?
- Will I find other people interested in the same things that I am?
- How can I prepare for my career?
- Will I feel like a part of the campus community or just another number?
Fraternities and sororities exist as a proven support network for your son as he/she embarks on this new period in his/her life. Over 800,000 students across the country are currently Greek.
The fraternity and sorority can help personalize your child’s college experience by offering a scholastic support system; hands-on experience in leading committees, managing budgets, and interacting with faculty and administrators; exposure to potential careers through educational programs and discussions with alumni; the chance to give back the community through service projects; and close friends who will cheer him on when he/she is successful and support him/her when times are tough. With all these opportunities available to them, it is no wonder that fraternity and sorority members tend to graduate from college at a higher rate than those not involved in Greek life.
As a parent, you are undoubtedly concerned about your child’s college experience and the choices he/she will make.
Many chapters at SIUC participate in the annual Saluki Family Weekend and many others host parent weekend activities. During the annual Saluki Family Weekend, many chapters participate in the annual Inter-Greek Council Greek Sing. Chapters sing and perform numerous family friendly skits on the steps of Shryock Auditorium. Chapter events are popular because they allow you, the parent, to visit your student during the academic year, meet other parents, and spend the weekend at the University. Many chapters have a Parents Club for parents to actively get involved with their students’ chapter, providing funds for the chapter to use towards furniture, computers, and snacks for finals week.
